Description: Mrs. Lydia L. Whiteman was a nurse who served during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. After serving initially with the Organization Relief Association in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she cared for patients at the Cooper Shop Hospital, she then served as a camp sick nurse at the U.S. General Hospitals at Georgetown, District of Columbia and Yorktown. She was then stationed at the Warren Barracks under Captain Manton. Following the Battle of the Wilderness, she rescued a soldier who had been left for dead (Colonel Baxter), and ordered that ambulance drivers transport him to the Union hospital located nearby. Post-war, she was a member of the National Association of Civil War Army Nurses, and resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1910.
