Description: Cupressus abramsiana var. abramsiana (Santa Cruz Cypress; syn. Hesperocyparis abramsiana). It is included under this variety name in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.2 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). It is also included under the species name as 'Endangered' by both the state and Federal government. Cupressus abramsiana, has always been a controversial taxon since it is intermediate between C. sargentii and C. goveniana. Some studies have suggested that C. abramsiana may be a natural hybrid between the two. Rare in nature though it may be, it has been in the nursery trade for a long time. For more information see the entry for the species in the Gymnosperm database www.conifers.org/cu/Cupressus_goveniana_abramsiana.php Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
