Description: Looking east at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in the United States in the summer of 1908. The Mall still shows the winding pathways and random plantings of its Victorian-era landscape design, created in 1851 by Andrew Jackson Downing. The recently-completed wings of the United States Department of Agriculture Building can be seen on the right. (The central structure, joining the two wings, would not be built until 1936.) The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, nearing completion, is visible at middle-left. Virginia Avenue SW extends into the background on the right. The slum known as Murder Bay is visible on the far left behind the Museum of Natural History.
