Description: This is a view looking west across the Red Fort from the Diwan-i-Am towards the Naqqar Khana (also known as the Hathiyan Pol or Elephant Gate) and in the distance the Lahore Gate. The Red Fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (r.1628-58) between 1639 and 1648. The Naqqar Khanna is the inner public gate of the palace at the Red Fort. The large red sandstone pavilion stands at the eastern end of an open space which leads into the Diwan-i-Am, the Emperor's Hall of public audience. Part of a portfolio of photographs taken in 1858 by Major Robert Christopher Tytler and his wife, Harriet, in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857.
