Description: Stone Arch Bridge on the NRHP since May 14, 1981. At NW corner of Springfield Ave. and 2nd St., Champaign, Champaign County, Illinois. Underwent reconstruction and/or destruction over the last 2 years. Very strange story, according to my understanding. "Bridge" was built in the 1870s but was more like a culvert or a pipe, 10 feet long by 100 feet wide, eventually turning the Boneyard Creek into an underground waterway at this point. The bridge may have saved the old city of Urbana, by connecting it to the newer railroad city of Champaign, but was part of a really messed up Boneyard Creek. Over the last 20 years Champaign-Urbana has cleaned up the Boneyard and put in flood-control parks, etc. including this site, Scott Park (just SW) and the Engineering Quad. This site, recently finished is a very impressive flood control park, but the "bridge" is only a remnant, say 10 feet long by 10 feet wide. Better check out this story, since I'm only beginning to figure it out.
