Description: Archway into the new nave, built by the Normans circa 1080, through the Saxon church wall in Newport Cathedral. When the archway was built the Saxon church was in ruins, so this would have been an outer entrance, but circa 1200 the Saxon church was repaired so this became an internal archway. In the distance through the archway, the Crindau Chapel can be seen.[source Cathedral leaflet]
