Description: The Blue Pullman trains were the precursors of the very successful HST and ran on routes from London to Manchester, Bristol, Swansea and Wolverhampton. They operated as a premium first class service, aimed at competing with the private car and domestic air services. They ran between 1960 and 1973 when the combination of the premium charge and improvements to other coaching stock made them uneconomic. This view shows one of the Western Region 8-car units in the original livery of blue with white window surround. This was later reversed and the ends of the cars painted safety yellow. It is crossing the Listed Grade II St James's Bridge, one of Brunel's original structures from 1840.
