Description: The Mercat Cross was the place where Edinburgh merchants gathered to transact business before the building of the Royal Exchange in 1753. It was also the site of executions. In 1756, the cross was removed. A new cross was built in the 1880s on a spot adjacent to St Giles High Kirk inside Parliament Square where the cross had originally stood before being moved to this site in 1617. The current location of the cross is only a few metres from the 1617-1656 location, and easily visible from it.
