Description: "Alackaday! I am fallen so low in place. I can reward thee only with niggardly thanks." Restoration of an illustration to Oscar Wilde's The Duchess of Padua, by an uncredited American artist. There was a lot of random dirt and random ink spots (you can tell they\'re not part of the art as they were on the border too). Took a few hours, but wasn't too bad, on the whole - just lots of little stuff. Another of the things I've had sitting around half-finished for years. I discovered there's almost no images for this play in existence, apparently (it is one of Wilde's most obscure works) so I thought I'd correct this. However, such research also showed that finding out the uncredited artist is unlikely, unfortunately.

The original image is, of course, out of copyright due to being an American work from before 1923.

Oh, yes: the grey cast to the image probably marks it as a photogravure. Those tend to be a little darker than the page itself, but have very fine gradients of shade.
