Description: Hobbiton is built into the hill side. Here is an overall view showing several of the 44 permanent Hobbit holes on the set. Usually the photo was taken within Hobbiton as we wandered the path showing other nearby Holes. Not all the Holes are accessible to visitors; some were designed to be just background in establishing shots in the movie. A scene from our tour of the Hobbiton set, made famous in the "Lord of the Rings" movie series. Located on the Alexander Sheep Farm near Matamata, New Zealand, the 12 acre movie set is a must-see for fans and is a delight for those who aren't familiar with the movies, too. 44 permanently constructed Hobbit Holes are on the site, as well as the Green Dragon Inn. Anything outside of a Hobbit Hole is artificial; a prop for the movie. It was springtime in the Shire when we visited. Baby lambs were bounding everywhere.
