Description: This former P&LE passenger station so resembles the one in Coraopolis that I assumed that both were part of a three-station commission awarded to Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. SR&C's office book lists stations for P&LE in Glassport, Coraopolis & New Castle Junction. I can find no evidence of the last and wondered if this location was substituted. However, in "Buildings of Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania" Lu Donnelly attributes the 1897 passenger station & 1911 freight house to R. P.Forsberg. I suppose hiring another architect to design a station in a style similar to the work of another is not unheard of - but this borders on plagiarism. There are subtle differences: the shape of the eyebrow windows is different & Coraopolis uses Roman brick instead of the standard proportion brick seen here. See the known Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge stations for P&LE below.
