Description: Front panel of the U.S. Army analog of the Japanese w:Type B Cipher Machine. This is the improved version of March 1944. The three rows of indicator lights show the position of the rotor in each stage. The plugboard in the center has a second connector wired to the connector on the front panel, presumably to minimize wear and tear on the main connector, as the plugboards are changed frequently. The signal connector and power jack for the output typewriter is to the left of the plug board; the input typewriter connector is at the far right. A six position switch selects the stepping order and buttons on the box at top center apparently are used to set the initial position of each rotor. A framed photograph of the unit with its typewriters is adjacent. Exhibit in the National Cryptologic Museum, Fort Meade, Maryland, USA.
