Description: This is a diorama by Ernest Whatley issued as a postcard by the Science Museum in the 1930s. It shows the screen in front of Carlton House in Pall Mall and the first street lighting in London circa 1809. The south side of Pall Mall was lit by a German proponent of gas lighting named Friedrich Winzer in 1807, he went on to light Westminster and Southwark but later left the UK in 1812 after encountering financial difficulties. I have a problem with the diorama, the sentries shown outside Carlton House appear to be Grenadier Guards wearing bearskins, the 1st Regiment of Foot did not adopt the name Grenadier or the bearskin until after Waterloo in 1815. Carlton House was the home of the Prince Regent, when he ascended the throne in 1820 it was decided that he should live at Buckingham House and that Carlton House be demolished. The house was demolished in 1825 and the site used for the new streets, Carlton House Terrace and Carlton Gardens, columns from the house were used for the portico of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.
