Description: City Island and Hart Island, off Orchard Beach, Pelham Bay and Pelham Bay Park, Bronx, New York, are the largest of the Pelham Islands. Also featured are The Blauzes and Chimney Sweeps Islands. The small island between those two, on a thin causeway off the north (right) end of City Island, is High Island, and the home of one tower radiating the signals of two of New York's original landmark 50,000-watt "clear channel" radio stations: WFAN/660 and WCBS/880, both now owned by CBS. WFAN was originally WEAF (broadcasting from across Long Island Sound in Bellmore. WCBS was originally WABC, and radiated from a tower on Columbia Island, off this shot to the right, and before that from Wayne, New Jersey. The north end of Hart Island is New York's potter's field: where the city has buried, and continues to bury (by prison labor) its unclaimed dead. It is the largest tax-funded cemetery in the world, with more than 800,000 corpses. Among other purposes, Hart Island has served as: A prison workhouse for delinquent boys, a women’s insane asylum, an isolation zone during the yellow fever epidemic, an old men’s home, a tuberculosis hospital, and a reformatory. In this respect it has been little different than countless other islands off the shores of cities such as San Francisco and Boston.
