Description: This photograph of the Sparrow-Hawk's reconstructed hull was taken on the Boston Common in 1865, two years after the wreck was found on Cape Cod in 1863. The Sparrow-Hawk was bound for Virginia with 25 new settlers in 1626. After a six week stormy voyage, she was off Cape Cod, then to be wrecked on a beach at Orleans. Discovered in 1863, the Sparrow-Hawk's hull is the oldest known remains of a pinnace in North America. Several nautical architects and shipwrights have worked with the timbers, but there is still no consensus as to details of hull design and the reconstruction. How the hull came to be exhibited on the Boston Common in 1865 is not known. The original image has been edited for contrast and lighting so as to enhance details.
