Description: Royal Air Force Radar, 1939-1945. Chain Home: the Mark 3 Console as installed in a receiver room of an East Coast station. This example combines the radar display, on the left, with the rest of the plotting and recording system. The large glass-topped cabinet in the center contained a map and a rolling pointer (seen roughly centred in the table) that was driven automatically by an analog computer known as the "fruit machine". Operators could select one of the tracked targets and the system would drive the pointer to the proper location on the map, where its grid co-ordinates could be read directly. This information was then recorded by operators sitting at the tables to the right, who would repeat it by telephone up the reporting chain. The large wooden boards above the console were used to pin notes.
