Description: Arabic astronomical handbook (zij) by the Samarkandi astronomer Khwaja Ghazi al-Sanjufini. Called the Sanjufini Zij. Compiled in 1363 and dedicated to his Mongolian patron Prince Radna who was the Viceroy of Tibet stationed in Hezhou in Gansu Province. Prince Radna was a descendant of Kublai Khan who was interested in Islamic astronomy like Kublai Khan and Hulagu Khan. The handbook is notable for having Middle Mongolian glosses written in vertical Mongolian script in its margins. Middle Mongolian gloss. Note the words maqam (position) and istiqamad (straight) are Arabic. Folio 52 verso Uridu maqam un qajiun medekü (Finding the side of the early position). Folio 53 recto Qoyidu maqam un istiqamad medekü (Finding the straight of the late position). Kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Public domain. Manuscript Arabe 6040. Time of composition is clearly indicated as 764 AH (1362-63 AD) at the beginning of the chapter of the eras. This is the year for which the lunar tables at the very end (folios 56-57) are calculated.
