Description: Savoyard Cuirassier's armour, c. 1600. This is one of the numerous pieces of armour captured by the Genevese in the Savoyard attack on the city in the night of 11/12 December 1602 (O.S.). The helmet (burgonet) represents the typical Savoyard fashion of the period, with a grinning mouth modelled on the face plate; in some specimens the face plate was made to resemble a grinning skull (hence the name Totenkopfhelm ("death's head helmet") given to this type of burgonet in German).
