The date "1640" is inscribed above the man, and the texts "FIRST ENGLISH SETTLEMENT IN THE STATE OF N.Y.", "TOWN OF SOUTHAMPTON" and "SEAL" surround the seal on its border. The town adopted the seal in 1929. The original creator of the seal is unknown.
