Description: The Sears, Roebuck and Company Warehouse and Service Center is located at 5901 Griggs Road in Houston, Texas. This building is in the National Register of Historic Places in the area of Commerce. The property was designed by Cowell & Neuhaus with Sears corporate architect John Stokes Redden as consulting architect in 1956. Sears, then the nation's leading retailer and an early pioneer in the era of mass consumption, invested heavily in the Houston market as the city grew from a mid-size town into one of the largest and most populous cities in the country after World War II. The property is the only example of its type within the local Sears network, and is representative of this remarkable growth after the war. The facility was the most up to date of its type in the country and the largest in the Southwest when it opened. In essence, it was the nerve center of a multi-million-dollar regional network that employed thousands of Houstonians and provided affordable goods to countless low- to middle-income families.
