Description: Arms of Evelyn of Godstone, Surrey. Coat of arms of Jane Evelyn (1588-1671), wife firstly of Sir Anthony Benn (c. 1568–1618) a barrister, appointed Recorder for the town of Kingston upon Thames in 1610, knighted in 1615 and appointed Recorder of London in 1616. Detail from Benn's monument in All Saints Church, Kingston upon Thames. Benn married Jane Evelyn in about 1601. Having survived her first husband she married secondly Sir Eustace Hart, whom she survived also. Her magnificent monument with recumbent marble effigy (see image[1]) survives in the Grey Mausoleum, Flitton, Bedfordshire, erected by her daughter Amabella Benn, the wife of Henry Grey, 10th Earl of Kent, and mother of Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent. The monument states that she was the daughter of "John Evelin of Godson, Surrey" (John Evelyn of Godstone). John Evelyn of Godstone married Elizabeth Stevens. In 1605 Benn purchased Norbiton Hall, in Norbiton to the east of Kingston, from the estate of George Evelyn who had died in 1603. His residence at Norbiton is now commemorated by a green plaque. The couple had at least two children; Charles (b.1608) and Amabella (1616–1698), 2nd wife of Henry Grey, 10th Earl of Kent.
