Description: Spindle berries in Leigh Woods The woods are noted as a habitat for the increasingly rare native spindle tree with its exotically shaped and coloured berries of which the seeds are poisonous and were once used as a verminifuge against lice, hence 'louse berry'. The spindle, Euonymus europaeus, has many other local names in Britain, while its generic name comes from the Greek 'having a good name' meaning fortunate.
