Description: An engraving of Sir Thomas de Littleton (also known as Thomas Littleton or Lyttleton; c. 1407 – 23 August 1481), an English judge and legal writer.
Title: Sr. Thomas Littleton Kt. Engraved by T. Trotter from the Original Picture in the Inner Temple Hall. Note: the arms are not Littleton, which are Argent, a chevron between three escallops sable. They appear to be attributed arms of King William the Conqueror, whose roundel portrait appears at left. These are an early form of Plantagenet arms, which became fixed as three lions passant guardant, not the two seen here. The Plantagenet blood did not enter the English royal family until the 12th century, long after the death of William I, and heraldry did not commence in England until about 1200-1215.
