Description: St James's church, Chipping Campden: Hicks monument. The sumptuous canopied tomb-chest of local benefactor Sir Baptist Hicks, Lord Campden (†1629), whose recumbent effigy in state robes lies alongside that of his wife Elizabeth May. The tomb canopy is supported by 12 columns of Egyptian marble. Knighted in 1603, and created a baronet in 1620, Baptist Hicks was a wealthy mercer who had access to the court through the influence of his brother Michael, who was a secretary to Lord Burghley, and a confidant of Robert Cecil. During his lifetime Hicks made a number of benefactions to the town of Campden that included the Almshouses, and the Market Hall, as well as a number of gifts to the church.
