Description: Shrewsbury Tower, St John's College, Cambridge, Second Court. Within a round-headed niche a statue of Mary Cavendish (1556–1632) the wife of w:Gilbert Talbot, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, sculpted by Thomas Burman in 1671 at the cost of her nephew William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, and brought from London. "Second Court was begun in 1598 under Dr. Richard Clayton, Master (1595–1612); the contractors were Ralph Symons of Westminster and Gilbert Wigge of Cambridge, freemasons, and the contract, with plans and elevations, is preserved in the College Library. The cost was partly borne by Mary (Cavendish) wife of Gilbert Talbot, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury. The work was finished in 1602 and the paths paved in 1603. The W. range contains the Gatehouse now called the Shrewsbury Tower".('St. John's College', in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in the City of Cambridge (London, 1959), pp. 187-202 [1]) Arms of Talbot impaling Cavendish below. A white marble copy of this statue depicts Lady Rachel Fane (Countess of Bath) (1613-1680) in Tawstock Church, Devon.
