Description: Built in Preston by English Electric and delivered in 1941, this Hampden was later converted into a 'TB.I' Torpedo Bomber and operated by No144sqn, RAF Coastal Command. It crashed in Sweden on the 4th September 1942, while on a transit flight to Russia to protect arctic convoys. At the time of the crash the aircraft had a crew of five. The impact is thought to have instantly killed Pilot Officer Bowler and Sergeants Jewett and Campbell, with Pilot Officer Evans and Corporal Sowerby miraculously surviving the impact. Briefly interned by the Swedish military, they were returned to the UK by the 21st September. The wreckage was recovered in 1976 and is now under restoration to static condition at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, East Kirkby, UK. 16-06-2014
