Description: Tappoch Broch - southern side. The main features of this broch are summarized in a note at the end of this article. For links to other images of the broch, see the main description: 1024921. The present photo was taken from within the central courtyard of the broch, and shows the inner wall on the southern side. The opening that can be seen here is not the main entrance, but leads, instead, to a stone stairway built within the structure of the walls. It is possible (by crouching down) to pass under the double lintel of the opening; the passage then turns sharply to the right (i.e., to the west), to follow the space between the outer and inner walls; it is within this space that the stone stairway is located. The steps are shown at 436930, where their purpose is also explained. I measured these steps to be, on average, about 12cm high, and 18cm deep, in a passage that is 0.7-0.8m wide. In what remains of the broch at present, the steps simply lead up to the wall-head (specifically, they lead to the part of the wall-head that appears at the right-hand edge of the photo).
