Description: A delegation of Embassy staff participated in a repatriation ceremony at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. The museum leads the Karanga Aotearoa National Repatriation Programme, working with museums around the world to bring home Maori and Moriori skeletal remains that were removed from New Zealand in the 19th Century. The most recent repatriation included 16 items from United States institutions, the deYoung Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the Yale Peabody Museum in Massachusetts, as well as one item from a museum in Germany. The remains were welcomed back to New Zealand in a formal powhiri (Maori welcome ceremony) comprising speeches and singing. Embassy staff were invited to be pall bearers for the service, carrying the ancestral remains, in conservation boxes, onto Te Papa’s marae. Public Affairs Officer Dolores Prin led the Embassy delegation and spoke about New Zealand’s and the United States’ shared cultural values around preservation of heritage, and strong people to people ties.
