Description: Original caption read: "A suggested model for the development of the later site of Wyke and its successor, the Old Town, over the period from c. 1260 to c. 1350. The earliest settlement in this area was close to the new cut of the River Hull, which had changed its course dramatically during the 1250s. During the period c. 1275-1285 the town began to expand westwards, with the construction of a new church and market. The first detailed record of individual tenements is in 1293, when Edward I acquired the town. By the time of the Town Rental of 1347 Hull had expanded greatly in size and was surrounded by newly built defences – still largely .an earth and timber circuit at this date; but, those defences were already being gradually replaced in brick – though the latter work would not be completed until the early fifteenth century."
