Description: The Leighton Fresco, St Michael and All Angels church, Lyndhurst The fresco entitled 'The Wise and Foolish Virgins' was created in 1862 and depicts the parable from St Matthew's Gospel. It is the work of Sir Frederic Leighton (1830-96) who later went on to become the President of the Royal Academy. Leighton offered to paint the fresco for only the cost of the paints. The fresco, beneath the church's east window, was retouched and restored a century after it was first painted, and again more recently to mark the centenary of Leighton's death.
