Description: "The house on the left was originally the home of Francis Sessions. The home on the right belonged to William Monypeny. The Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and the Columbus Art Association were both chartered in 1878. On October 30, 1878 The Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts became the first art museum in Ohio to register its’ charter with the State. The Columbus Art Association established the Columbus Art School, now known as the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD), in 1879. Both organizations were located initially in the Sessions Building at 181 North High Street. Classes were held there until 1888. Land for the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts was willed to the Gallery upon the death of Francis Sessions in 1892. The art collection for the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts was displayed in the Sessions house at 478 East Broad Street. Sessions also provided money to fund the Columbus Art School which moved into the adjacent Monypeny house at 492 East Broad Street. The new Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts opened January 22, 1931 on the sites of these two houses. The building was completed in 1932. The name was later changed to the Columbus Museum of Art on the museums’ centennial in 1978. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 19, 1992, under its original name."
