Description: The Royal Hall The Royal Hall opened as The Kursaal on 28th May 1903, and in its early years some of the world's great artistic talents appeared on the stage here, including Edward Elgar, Fritz Kreisler and Dame Nelly Melba. Some 60 years later a little known beat combo known as The Beatles also appeared on stage. [whatever happened to them?] The name was changed to Royal Hall after the outbreak of WW1 as no German name could be allowed [although it is still carved in stone above the entrance]. In the 1990's the concert hall was closed due to structural problems which would have been expensive to rectify, but thankfully, due to the efforts of local fund raisers, grants etc, the hall has been repaired and redecorated and is nearly ready for its grand reopening.
