A BIG GIN AT FORT McALLISTER Fort McAllister is at last in complete possession of the Federals, and a group of the men who had charged over these ramparts hasarranged itself before the camera as if in the very act of firing the great gun that points seaward across the marshes, toward OssabawSound There is one very peculiar thing proved by this photograph—the gun itself is almost in a fixed position as regards range andsweep of fire. Instead of the elevating screw to raise or depress the muzzle, there has been substituted a block of wood wedged witha heavy spike, and the narrow pit in which the gun carriage is sunk admits of it being turned but a foot or so to right or left. Itevidently controlled one critical point in the river, but could not have been used in lending any aid to the repelling of General Hazensattack.
