CONFEDERATES IN CAMP This photograph of Confederate troops in eamp was taken at Camp Moore, Louisiana, in 1861. The manwriting the letter home on the box is Emil Yaquin, and Arthur Roman is the man completing the washing.Thomas Russel is gleaning the latest news from the paper, and Amos Russel is grinding coffee. The fifthman is Octave Babin. Names of French extraction, these, appropriate to Louisiana. The soldiers arefacing their period of breaking-in. A veteran of the eastern army describes this transition period: Ourbreaking-in was rather rough—it was the beginning of a prolonged spell of wet, raw weather, which is sooften mentioned in McClellans reports of his operations on the Peninsula—and, with little notion of how toadapt ourselves to the situation, we suffered much discomfort at first. After the experience of a few monthsand witli half the equipage we then possessed, we would have been entirely comfortable, by campaigningstandards.
