Text Appearing Before Image: nstitution is reached by the cars of the Union line (Fairmountbranch) and by the Girard Avenue branch of the Fourth and EighthStreets line. Visitors are admitted every afternoon, except Saturdayand Sunday, on presentation of tickets, which may be procured of themanagers or at the Public Ledge? office. Moyamensing Prison, the County Prison of Philadelphia, is situ-ated at Tenth Street and Passyunk Avenue. It is a massive granitestructure, consisting of a central building and two wings, flanked withoctagonal towers, and contains four hundred cells for males and onehundred cells for female prisoners. Visitors to the Prison take the cars on Tenth or on Twelfth Street, orthe cars of the Union line going south, all of which convey passengersto the immediate vicinity. Visitors permits are obtained at the Mayorsoffice, at Fifth and Chestnut Streets. PUBLIC SQUARES. Franklin Square, one of the four principal public Squares of thecity, extends from Vine Street on the north to Race Street on the Text Appearing After Image: PUBLIC SQUARES. 85- south, and from Sixth Street on the east to Franklin Street on thewest, covering an area of over seven acres. It is filled with fine shade-trees, and in its centre is a beautiful fountain. Franklin Square isreached from the northern and northwestern sections of the city by thecars on Sixth Street, and by the cars of the Union line, both of whichpass the Square; also by the Ridge Avenue cars, which, at Tenth andVine, pass two squares distant, and the Green Street cars, which passat Fourth and Vine Streets, two squares distant. From the west, theCallowhill Street cars pass at Seventh Street, one square distant, theRace Street cars pass the Square, and the Arch Street cars at SeventhStreet pass one square distant; from the southern and southeasternsections of the city, the cars of the Union line pass at Ninth and Race,two squares distant, the Eighth Street cars pass at Race Sreet, withinone square, and the Vine Street cars pass the Square.
