Description: Screenshot from the original trailer for the film Adam's Rib (1949), featuring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Public domain explanation The Copyright Act of 1909, which was law until 1978, determined that a work was copyrighted for 28 years. In the 28th year, the owner of the copyright had to renew the copyright. If he did not, his work went into the public domain (see here). The copyright for this trailer would therefore have to be renewed in 1977. A search with US copyright records from January-June 1977 and July-December 1977 find no trace that this occurred. It is therefore in the public domain.
