Description: BLACK BUTTE LAKE, Calif. (Sep. 26, 2009) -- Dan Goodrich of Chico, Calif., tosses a 'chip shot' toward a bucket Sept. 26 at the Black Butte Lake disc golf course during National Public Lands Day. Representatives from two Chico-area disc golf clubs volunteered to clean up around the lake and to continue work on the course that he and other Aces team members, working with the Army Corps of Engineers, created and developed. Chico Disc Golf Club approached the Corps in 2006 to use some of its land at Black Butte to construct a new disc golf course. The club started fundraising and seeking sponsors. They did most of the work to construct the course and build the paths, and received some support from the Boy Scouts. Eventually they found a sponsor to help fund bucket purchases, signs and to help pay for course upkeep. The sponsor agreed to fund the 18-hole course in exchange for five years of annul fundraising through tournaments at the course that will benefit the Glenn Community Medical Center in Willows. "It will be kind of a multi-use area, because the paths for the disc golf course will be used by walkers and by anglers for access (to the lake)," Deeming added. "So, we feel like it will be a big benefit to the area, a benefit to Black Butte Lake. It is definitely a testament to grass roots volunteerism.""
