Description: Demonstration model of a fire engine (vuurmachine) built by Jan Paauw, instrument maker for the professors of Leiden University, in 1774. Was used in physics classes for decades. Originally commissioned by Jean Allemand, the successor to Petrus van Musschenbroek, this demonstration model is based on the atmospheric steam engine developed by Newcomen in 1712. Now on display with other contemporary physics demonstration models in the Boerhaave Museum of Leiden, the Netherlands. This model demonstrates the use of steam technology to raise water, and was probably the inspiration for the fire engine built in nearby Heemstede in 1781.
