Description: Black Walnut Thicket, Brandywine, Maryland. This property is among one of the few plantations in the 19th century that held slaves to work the land. Originally located in the Census District of Nottingham, it would today be called Brandywine. I came across the existence of this property while researching the existence of slaves in Brandywine. I found a log of Runaway Slaves in which one person (runaway) was mentioned as being escaped from there. The Nottingham District, in 1860 had 969 Free Whites, 129 Free Blacks, and 1,360 slaves for a total population of 2,458 although there were only a total of 63 Slave Holders. (According to Simon J. Martinet's 1861 Atlas of Prince George's County, and Web site of Joyce Dowling for Runaway Slaves of Brandywine) - Deborah Hairston, November 25, 2012.
