Description: Superfund sites near Waukegan, IL Harbor: OMC (Outboard Marine Company, in purple), PCB contamination of land and harbor [1] WCP (Waukegan Coke Plant, in red), contaminated with arsenic and coal tars [2] Johns-Manville asbestos disposal site (yellow) [3] Slip #1 is an industrial cargo shipping slip, actively used for receiving of gypsum and cement by nearby corporate cargo plants. Slip #3 has been converted to a PCB Sediment Containment Cell, to safely hold sediment until it can be treated. Slip #4 has been converted for use by recreational boats. The Superfund sites remain listed on the National Priorities List. The sites are considered generally safe for the nearby public[4], but the sites themselves remain brownfields while final cleanup of the removed soil continues. Smaller contaminated areas nearby have occasionally been found.[5]
