Description: William Pennington, Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives. Note: William Pennington’s portrait was acquired in 1911 as part of the House’s initiative to acquire oil portraits of each former Speaker. Joseph Lauber, a German-born artist who studied with William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in New York, completed the commission. As an artist, Lauber was better known for his murals and decorative work. He collaborated with John LaFarge on Cornelius Vanderbilt’s residence, and on the stained glass windows of New York’s Appellate Court.
