Description: This is the Wilmot Swinging Bridge over the Tuckaseigee River at Wilmot, North Carolina. The bridge was constructed circa 1964, but has some evidence of materials dating back to 1906 being part of the structure, with a Bridge Plate from the Roanoke Bridge Company being present on one of the structural members. The bridge was built to allow residents on the west bank of the river along the Murphy Branch Railroad to access the highway (now US 74-441) on the other side. The bridge structure consists of steel towers, steel cables, and steel hanging rods, while the deck of the bridge and lateral supports are wooden. The bridge is the last of many swinging bridges that once existed in Jackson County, with other bridges known to have been located in Dillsboro and East LaPorte.
