Description: Sparling Sales Building (centre), 120 King Street, 1896 - Located in the heart of a growing needle trade district, built for Andrew Carruthers for the trade of hides, wool, furs and seneca root. In 1906, the upper floor of the building was rented to "Der Nordesten Publishing Company". This was the first German language press in western Canada, printing the weekly paper "Der Norwesten" since 1889. At it's peak in the decade from 1904, it published 20,000 copies weekly and employed 30 people. Difficulties arrose during the 1st world war when all foreign papers were forced to publish in English. During the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, publication was suspended. From 1951 to 1983, Sparling Sales operated a radio and television wholesale supply firm. In 1983, the building was converted to offices with a restaurant, The King's Head Pub, in the basement.
