Koenig, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Koenig is an unincorporated community in Osage County, in the U.S. state of Missouri.

History

A post office called Koenig was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1920. The community was named after early postmaster Henry G. King (King is "Koenig" in German). The village was originally named Indian Creek for the small stream west of the village. Two community features were the Indian Creek School and the German Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1856 German families settled near Indian Creek, and two years later Karl and Johann Gottfried Giecke arrived from Hamilton County, Ohio and fostered development of the church congregation. The first church building was constructed in 1859, replaced by a stone building in 1879 which is still in use. Community and church history was detailed in Gasconade County Republican August 11, 1932. Bureau of Land Management records show Johann Gottfried Gieck's Indian Creek land patent dated to 1857. Indian Creek School location is shown on 1913 Osage County plat map.
