New Albin is a city in Iowa Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. It is the northeasternmost town in Iowa, located on the Mississippi River and the Minnesota border. The population was 432 at the time of the 2020 census.

History

New Albin was platted in 1872 shortly after the Chicago, Dubuque and Minnesota Railroad had been built through that territory. It was named for the son of a railroad official.

Geography

New Albin is located at 43°29′49″N 91°17′14″W / 43.49694°N 91.28722°W / 43.49694; -91.28722 (43.497019, -91.287328).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.24 square miles (0.62 km2), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 522 people, 222 households, and 138 families living in the city. The population density was 2,175.0 inhabitants per square mile (839.8/km2). There were 257 housing units at an average density of 1,070.8 per square mile (413.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.1% White, 0.4% African American, 1.5% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.4% of the population.

There were 222 households, of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.8% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.01.

The median age in the city was 43.5 years. 25.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 21.1% were from 25 to 44; 25.7% were from 45 to 64; and 22.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.6% male and 50.4% female.
