History

Orient was established as a station on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the northwest corner of Scioto township.

Orient is featured in the Together Concepts video production "We Are..Teays Valley". The video depicts a surprising number of achievements and innovations, as well as connections to American and world history.

Dissolution

On January 15, 2012, The Columbus Dispatch reported that the village was considering disbanding. Three days later, the Circleville Herald published a similar report. Orient residents collected 33 signatures, one more than required by Ohio law, to put the issue on the ballot. The village was to hold a special election on August 7 to vote on dissolution; however, the petition for the ballot initiative was rejected by the Pickaway County board of elections when it was found to have more signatures than those certified by the petition circulator.

Petition circulators assembled new petitions and put the issue on the May 2013 primary election ballot. On May 7, 2013 the village voted 38-30 in favor of dissolution after only 68 of the 165 registered voters in the village voted on the issue. The village was dissolved back into Scioto Township.
