Pierson is a village in Montcalm County of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 172 at the 2010 census. The village is within Pierson Township.

In 1856, David S. Pierson acquired forty acres of land here. With Dexter Clark and John L. Shar, Pierson founded the community while it was still part of Mecosta County. Pierson opened the first post office in his home on January 29, 1857. It was platted in 1870 and incorporated as a village in 1873.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.25 square miles (0.65 km2), all land.

The Pierson post office, with ZIP code 49339, also serves most of Pierson Township, as well as portions of Maple Valley Township to the east.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 172 people, 62 households, and 45 families residing in the village. The population density was 688.0 inhabitants per square mile (265.6/km2). There were 73 housing units at an average density of 292.0 per square mile (112.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.3% White, 0.6% African American, and 1.2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.

There were 62 households, of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 14.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 27.4% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.16.

The median age in the village was 30.3 years. 29.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 31.9% were from 25 to 44; 21.5% were from 45 to 64; and 7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 56.4% male and 43.6% female.

Education

Tri County Area Schools, which operates Tri County High School, serves Pierson.
