Rutherfordton is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,213 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat.

History

The town has many historical places that have been registered on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Bechtler Mint Site, Carrier Houses, Fox Haven Plantation, Gilbert Town Historic District, George W. Logan House, Main Street Historic District, Rutherford County Courthouse, Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School, St. Luke's Chapel, and Trinity Lutheran Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Rutherfordton is located at 35°21′59″N 81°57′32″W / 35.36639°N 81.95889°W / 35.36639; -81.95889 (35.366306, -81.959024).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km²), all of it land.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 3,640 people, 1,882 households, and 893 families residing in the town.

Attractions

KidSenses Children's InterACTIVE Museum, is located at 172 N. Main Street, in historic downtown Rutherfordton. The museum features over 40 interactive exhibits in a 10,000 square-foot space. The museum occupies a building that was previously a "Five and Dime" store in the late 1920s and a car dealership in the 1960s. In addition to exhibits, the museum offers public events, field trip program experiences, and "Science on the Move" outreach programming. Opening in October 2005, the museum has had upwards of 300,000 visitors.

Rutherford Regional Medical Center operates a museum that is free of charge, displaying historical medical equipment, attire and photographs documenting the history of the hospital. The museum opened its doors in 2005.

Camp Bud Scheile, a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) resident camp Of the Piedmont Council, is located on 663 Boy Scout Road in Rutherfordton.
