The Tale of the Heike (平家物語, Heike Monogatari) is an epic account of the struggle between two rival clans at the end of the 12th century. In the title of this work, the Heike (平家) is one of several ways to describe the Taira (平) clan.

This conflict is also known in the Genpei War (1150-1185).

Translations

This long story has been translated into English at least five times, including

  • 1818-1821 by Arthur Lindsay Sadler
  • 1956 by Fuki Wooyenaka Uramatsu.
  • 1975 by Hiroshi Kitagawa and Bruce Tsuchida
  • 1988 by Helen McCullough
  • 2012 by Royall Tyler

An abridged translation by Burton Watson was published in 2006.
