Description: The Edwin P. Goodwin House located at 1800 Vermont Avenue, NW in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Queen Anne building was constructed in 1879 for insurance agent Edwin P. Goodwin. Local architect Diller B. Groff designed the home. From 1921-1927, the rowhouse served as the first permanent home of Frelinghuysen University. The school was founded in 1917 and named in honor of New Jersey Senator Frederick T. Frelinghuysen, a supporter of civil rights for African-Americans. Frelinghuysen provided educational programs, social services, and religious training for working-class African-Americans during the time of racial segregation. The school continued to operate at various locations until it was closed in the 1950s. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing property to the Greater U Street Historic District.
